The Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures film, The Secret Life of Pets, opened last Friday, greeting the weekend with largely warm reviews. With a budget of about $75 million, the film was predicted to bring in about $70 million the first weekend, still a successful result, but has instead crashed through the expectations.
As of Sunday, the film earned the title of best opening ever for an original animated film, not adjusting for inflation, at over $103 million. This charges past the previous record-holder, Pixar's Inside Out, which stood at $90.1 million. With Disney's The BFG floundering in theaters, Illumination Entertainment's newest charming film merely had to unseat Finding Dory, a Pixar sequel which was enjoying a three-week run. As for next weekend, the competition is the new Ghostbusters, starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.
