Norm of the North: A Frozen Flop

Norm of the North must break some sort of record for being the least liked film so soon after Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Roadtrip, and somehow still making money in the box office. The film also breaks a record for being one of, if not the only, film standing at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A poorly animated Happy Feet featuring a polar bear, every possible film trope, and a degrading amount of potty humor, Norm of the North is a terrible step in the wrong direction for animated films. Rather than taking any sort of opportunity to experiment, to produce something original, or otherwise forward animation's fight for equality with the rest of the film industry, this film takes the laziest route of film creation - a slapdash conglomeration of tropes, overused story elements, and incredibly limited animation.

I gather much of these opinions from my limited exposure to the film - its trailer, critic reviews, and audience reviews. Since movie tickets (and concession stand products) in the Bay Area are twice the price of those in Santa Barbara, I chose not to waste any money on this film. For parents, kids, young adults, and/or animation fans considering Norm of the North for weekend viewing - you may be mildly entertained, but it won't last. This is a Direct-to-DVD kind of film, and should have been treated as such. Instead, we've been hearing about it through marketing for at least the past year - you would think the crew would try to make a film that lives up to its hype.

Stay tuned for behind the scenes fun, news, and the next Film of the Week. Don't forget to vote for your favorite Best Animated Feature Annie Awards nominee on our poll.
