Coraline is a lot of fun in many ways, with vibrant design and a beautiful score, but what I love most about it is how it breaks that stereotype that animated films (of any medium) are just for kids. This movie is scary. Maybe not as scary as some other animated movies that really are aimed at adults (Bakshi), but as a family film, this movie is downright terrifying. With that in mind, be careful putting this on for the kids because it will possibly give nightmares to kids ten and under, and that's a generous number. No matter how many times I watch it, I always get creeped out and start to panic that Coraline may not defeat the Beldam and I end up talking to my computer screen and... It's just scary, alright?
The Nightmare Before Christmas is as much fun as Coraline is terrifying. With charming musical numbers, punny humor, and beautiful production design, Nightmare is simply a joy to watch. It's macabre and creepy but never gets too dark without a little humor. As a testament to its classic nature, Disney has made an effort to push Nightmare into the parks, especially in Haunted Mansion, making the holidays even better for fans of the film. Danny Elfman is even in concert the next two nights to bring Nightmare Before Christmas back to life before our very eyes. Younger children may get frightened but ultimately this film is the end-all, be-all of Halloween family classics.
