5 Animated Easters

This weekend brings Easter eggs, Peeps, and lots of rabbit ears. Although the animation industry has a lot of love for Christmas, there aren't many animated options for Easter. Let's take a look at some animated Easter classics to enjoy this coming holiday weekend:

It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, 1974

Like another popular Charlie Brown special, this holiday special features Linus and his belief in a new holiday figure - the Easter Beagle. As the neighborhood kids prepare, Linus puts his faith in the Easter Beagle and, boy, does Snoopy deliver! The special is a cute and fun animation for Sunday morning.

The Easter Bunny is Comin' to Town, 1977

A Rankin/Bass special, to the same tune as Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, the holiday special features narrator Fred Astaire and follows the Easter Bunny's life story, from an orphan bunny to the most loved bunny in the world. The stop-motion claymation is on par with Rankin/Bass' previous special and the story is especially cute.

Springtime with Roo, 2004

One of the only Winnie the Pooh films to not be a mish-mash of shorts, Springtime with Roo is like the Easter version of A Christmas Carol. When Rabbit decides to make Easter into Spring Cleaning Day and cancel Easter in the Hundred Acre Wood forever, both Tigger and the Narrator stage an intervention to remind Rabbit about the fun of the holiday. Though not superb writing, the animation is solid and the characters are as charming as ever!

Hop, 2011

A much more recent film, Hop follows the story of the Easter Bunny's son, who really doesn't want to be the Easter Bunny. When he runs away to the human world, he meets Fred O'Hare, an out-of-work human with his own Easter aspirations. What follows is a quirky, slightly predictable film that isn't great but provides humor and entertainment for the holiday. Check out the trailer above, or here.

Rise of the Guardians, 2012

Despite the focus on Jack Frost and winter in this truly awesome DreamWorks film, the actual occurring holiday is Easter. The Easter Bunny, E. Aster Bunnymund, is from New Zealand (Easter Island), and is more like a kangaroo in form. There is a whole montage of Easter egg painting, which is super fun and absolutely gorgeous to watch. I love this film and, with its versatility, you can probably watch it for many more holidays than just Easter. Check out the trailer above, or here.

Stay tuned for animation appreciation, news, and a new Film of the Week!
